Veterans Grove Opens Today In Harrisburg

A new community of tiny homes, named Veterans Grove, opens today in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, providing housing for homeless veterans. The village, which has been under construction for a year, consists of 15 fully-furnished tiny homes and a 6,500-square-foot community center.

The project is the brainchild of Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania, a Harrisburg-based nonprofit. The organization's co-founder, Tom Zimmerman, said the aim is to provide a helping hand to veterans and give them the dignity they deserve.

The community center will offer therapeutic programs for the veterans, including mental health and substance abuse services, as well as financial and technology literacy programs. The goal is to help the veterans work as a community to get back on their feet.

"Pulling them out of that isolation and putting them into that group of veterans, who have gone through the same thing, is a really powerful way to have them forge connections with each other and have those meaningful experiences that will help them be successful when they leave," said Angel McLaughlin, the clinical director for Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania.

The first residents are expected to move into the tiny home community by June 10. The homes are all ADA-compliant and each resident will receive a laptop and be taught basic computer skills.

The project has been funded through donations and in-kind contributions, raising about $4.8 million. The land for the village was donated by community member Peggy Grove.
