Newspaper Carrier Called Hero for Saving Reader's Life
(Wyomissing, PA) -- A 41-year-old man from Sinking Spring is being credit for saving an elderly woman's life on his newspaper delivery route. Police officials say Lee Heckrote, who has delivered the Reading Eagle for the last 18 years, noticed some of the papers were left outside Dona Mazurkiewicz's home in Wyomissing. He says that's unusual because he knew the 84-year-old retrieved her paper every day. He also noticed her mail was piling up and her TV remained on. When he contacted officials for a welfare check, they found her at the top of the stairs and say she'd likely been there for a couple of days. She's now in a rehab center, but her son credits Heckrote's observations and actions with saving his mother's life.
