Study: Waiting For Trial Behind Bars Linked To Harsher Sentences

(Undated) -- A new study of Lehigh Valley courts finds that defendants held before trial tend to get heavier sentences. The Lehigh Valley Justice Institute looked through Lehigh and Northampton county court records from 2017 to 2021. They discovered that people who are out of jail awaiting trial get shorter sentences and are more likely to get a non-prison punishment. In fact, just spending a single day in pre-trial detention increased the odds that a defendant gets incarceration instead of probation.
