>>Measure on Performing Pelvic Exams Becomes Law
(Harrisburg, PA) -- A measure from the Pennsylvania state House that deals with pelvic exams is now law. Governor Josh Shapiro on Tuesday signed House Bill 507, which makes it illegal to perform this kind of gynecological exam without a patient's consent. The law also covers rectal and prostate examinations with exceptions for medical emergencies or within the scope of care ordered. Patients will now have to give written and verbal consent to the exams. Supporters were concerned that some exams were being performed on patients while they were under anesthesia for separate procedures.
