New sentencing standards for people convicted of driving under the influence are taking effect next month. Act 33 requires first-time offenders who blow a point-one or higher on a breathalyzer to get an ignition interlock instead of having their licenses suspended. Repeat offenders can apply for the system halfway through their suspensions. Lawmakers say the change will help offenders continue to be productive members of society.
