Salmonella Outbreak Hits Pennsylvania

A salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers has affected more than 160 people across the United States, with Pennsylvania reporting the highest number of cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that 27 people in Pennsylvania have fallen ill due to the outbreak, the highest number in the country.

The cucumbers, distributed by Florida-based company Fresh Start Produce Sales, have been recalled in 14 states, including Pennsylvania. The recall was initiated after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture found one of the company's products tested positive for salmonella.

The CDC has reported a total of 162 cases across 25 states, with 54 people hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. The cucumbers in question are dark green, approximately 1.5 - 2.0 inches in diameter, and 5-9 inches long. The recall does not include mini or English cucumbers.

Consumers are advised not to eat the recalled cucumbers and to check with the store where they purchased them to see if they are part of the recall. Items and surfaces that may have been in contact with the produce should be cleaned using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. It can be fatal in vulnerable populations such as children, senior citizens, and people with weaker immune systems. In rare cases, it can cause conditions such as arthritis.
