As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission anticipates nearly three million vehicles will traverse the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Thursday (September 3) to Monday (September 7). This marks a 1.2% increase from last year. The heaviest traffic is expected during the first two days of the holiday weekend.
To ensure smooth travel, the Pennsylvania Turnpike will suspend all construction and maintenance projects from Thursday at 3 p.m. until Monday at 11 p.m. This suspension aims to keep as many lanes open as possible. Additionally, the Pennsylvania State Police Troop T will increase patrols to monitor speed limits and ensure safe driving practices.
The Turnpike Commission has also implemented full enforcement of "Paul Miller's Law," which prohibits the use of hand-held devices while driving. Violators will face a $50 fine, along with court costs and other fees. The law allows for hands-free technology to be used for calls, GPS, and music.
Travelers will notice ongoing construction related to the Turnpike's transition to Open Road Tolling (ORT), which allows tolls to be charged electronically without stopping. This system is already live in some areas, and its expansion continues.
