The Kipona Festival in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, will once again feature a fireworks show during the Labor Day weekend. Scheduled for Sunday (August 31), the fireworks will be part of a larger event that includes a drone show over the Susquehanna River. This marks the return of fireworks after they were removed from city events due to safety concerns following violent incidents at two of the last three Fourth of July celebrations.
Mayor Wanda Williams announced the decision to bring back the fireworks, emphasizing that there will be extra security measures in place to ensure public safety. The city has developed a new safety plan, which includes bag checks and restrictions on large group gatherings. A command post will be set up at Front and Walnut streets to oversee the event.
The Kipona Festival, now in its 109th year, will take place from August 30 through September 1. Attendees can enjoy live music, food, games, and more. The festival has been a longstanding tradition in Harrisburg, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate the end of summer.
While the return of fireworks is a welcome change for many, Mayor Williams remains cautious about future events, stating that the behavior of attendees at Kipona will influence decisions about future fireworks displays, including next year's Fourth of July celebration.
