A driver attempting to evade police in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, caused a crash on Monday (July 6). According to the Hampden Township Police Department, the incident began around 12:30 p.m. on Gateway Drive when officers tried to stop a driver suspected of having a suspended license. During the stop, officers detected a "strong odor" of marijuana and asked the driver to exit the vehicle. Instead, the driver rolled up the window and fled the scene.
The suspect's vehicle crossed the median and collided with a pickup truck on the on-ramp of Route 581 at Carlisle Pike. Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended shortly after. Police Chief Jason Yerg confirmed that the suspect's vehicle was secured pending a search warrant, and marijuana was recovered from the scene.
The incident led to the temporary closure of I-581 exit ramps to Carlisle Pike as crews responded. The investigation is ongoing, and no threat to the public remains.
