FEMA TO DO A NATIONWIDE TEST TODAY AT 2:20 P.M.

TheFederal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a nationwide emergency test alert this week.

FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will test its emergency alert system (EAS) on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 2:20 p.m.

The test will include both EAS systems — radio and television, and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) for those who have opted in on their cell phones.

The test message will state:

“THIS IS A TEST of the National Emergency Alert System. This system was developed by broadcast and cable operators in voluntary cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Communications Commission, and local authorities to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency an official message would have followed the tone alert you heard at the start of this message. No action is required.”

For those who have opted in to receive WEA test messages, the message that appears on their phones will read:“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”

The emergency test alerts are intended to ensure public safety officials have the methods and systems that will deliver urgent alerts and warnings to the public in times of an emergency or disaster. It will ensure that the EAS and WEA systems continue to be the most effective means of warning the public about emergencies, particularly those on the national level.
