September is Hunger Action Month, join the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in raising awareness for hunger in our communities
September is Hunger Action Month, a time when the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank joins other Feeding America food banks across the country to raise awareness on the issue of hunger in our communities. Food insecurity is unacceptable, but if each of us acts, we can end hunger.
Record inflation is impacting all of us, but for many families, children, seniors and veterans, it is putting a tighter squeeze on their progress to recover from the economic effects of the pandemic. Family budgets are strained and household bills continue to rise. When difficult times hit, healthy food can be the first thing people forego to make ends meet.
From July 2021 to June 2022, more than 413,000 individuals were provided healthy food through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and our network of local partner agencies. We provided nearly 47 million meals. While the Food Bank and its partners remain a critical lifeline for temporary food assistance, our mission does not end there. The true measure of the Food Bank’s impact will be the achievement of greater food security and lesser demand for food distribution long term and ending hunger for good.
The Food Bank is committed to ending hunger by building an infrastructure to analyze information on the current charitable food distribution landscape and increase our understand of food insecurity through community hunger mapping initiatives; increasing our focus on equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging; and connecting partners with their local food producers to capture even more fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy and protein to share with neighbors in need right in their own community.
Working together, we can end hunger. The public can help take action in their communities in three important ways:
Learn: Learn about hunger in your community by reading or watching stories of those facing food insecurity. Information on hunger is available at www.centralpafoodbank.org.
Commit: Make a donation or pledge to volunteer at the Food Bank or one of its partner agencies. Create a Virtual Food Drive and share it with friends and family members.
Speak up: Call or write local lawmakers and ask them to support programs that help the charitable food network and address the root causes of hunger in our communities. Share stories of hunger on social media and raise awareness among your circle of influence.
The COVID-19 crisis revealed how vulnerable so many Pennsylvanians are to hunger. Many are just one missed paycheck or medical emergency away from financial hardship. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is working with its network of more than 1,000 partner agencies and programs throughout 27 counties to bring food to individuals, families, children, seniors and veterans so they don’t have to make impossible choices and always have access to fresh, nutritious food.
