Pennsylvania motorcyclists now have the flexibility to get their vehicles inspected year-round, thanks to a new law signed by Governor Josh Shapiro. Act 149 of 2024, which took effect on January 17, 2025, eliminates the previous seasonal restriction that confined motorcycle inspections to the months between March and October. This change aligns motorcycle inspection schedules with those of passenger vehicles, allowing inspections at any time of the year.
According to PennDOT, there are over 355,000 registered motorcycles in Pennsylvania. The new law provides motorcyclists with more options to keep their vehicles road-ready and ensures compliance with annual inspection requirements. The safety inspection sticker will be valid for one year from the expiration of the previous sticker, but it cannot be issued for more than 15 months from the date of inspection.
Kara Templeton, PennDOT Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services, emphasized that the change enhances convenience for motorcycle owners and ensures their vehicles remain in optimal condition for road safety. The Shapiro Administration's enactment of Act 149 simplifies the logistics of vehicle safety inspections, fostering a more equitable and rider-friendly transportation network within the state.
