Vice Presidential candidates, Republican Senator JD Vance from Ohio and Democratic Governor Tim Walz from Minnesota, are set to participate in the only vice-presidential debate of the 2024 US election cycle. The debate will be hosted by CBS News in New York City on Tuesday, October 1, at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The event will be moderated by CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan.
This debate will be the only opportunity for the candidates to present their policy positions to the broader American public. Both candidates have similar roles in their respective campaigns: to appeal to working-class voters in the "Blue Wall" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin this fall.
Vance, a first-term senator, came to political relevance when he wrote the book Hillbilly Elegy, blaming Biden and Democrats for the struggles of the rural economy he grew up in. In the Senate, Vance has positioned himself against Republican leadership at times but on issues like abortion, immigration, and election integrity, he's closely aligned with Trump.
Walz, a former football coach and teacher, secured several progressive wins in his state, including clean energy mandates, universal free school meals, family and medical leave benefits, and abortion protections. Since his nomination, Vance has had to address controversies that are likely to come up again during the debate, including couch-related jokes and criticisms of him calling prominent Democrats “childless cat ladies.”
The debate will last 90 minutes and both campaigns have agreed to a set of rules. There will be no audience in attendance, and the candidates will each take a stand behind podiums. Candidates will have two minutes for closing statements. Vance won a virtual coin toss on Sept. 26 and elected to go second with his closing statement.
US viewers can watch the debate live on the CBS News network or stream it via CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+. The event will also be simulcast on platforms like PBS News, C-Span, and Fox News. NPR will also provide live updates, analysis, and fact-checking during the debate.
Rules Announced For VP Debate
(New York, NY) -- Unlike the presidential debate, the vice presidential candidates' microphones will remain on at all times in their upcoming debate. CBS News on Friday announced the debate rules to which the campaigns for Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance agreed. CBS News did say that moderators could turn off the microphones if necessary. For the presidential debate between Vice President Harris and former President Trump, the microphone was muted for the candidate who was not responding. But just as the presidential debate, there will be no audience for the VP debate. CBS anchor Norah O'Donnell and Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate, which is set for Tuesday at 9 p.m. Eastern from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.
