The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered a recall of Perrigo Company's powdered baby formula due to elevated levels of Vitamin D. The recall affects over 16,000 cans of store brand Premium Infant Formula with Iron Milk-Based Powder, which were distributed to H-E-B Grocery Company in Texas and CVS pharmacies in 12 states, including Pennsylvania. The recall applies to any product shipped after February 6, 2024.
The issue was discovered through routine testing, and there have been no reports of adverse health effects to date. However, the FDA warns that for a small subset of infants, particularly those with impaired renal function, consumption of the recalled product could result in health complications.
According to the FDA, "For the vast majority of infants, short-term consumption of the affected lot codes is unlikely to cause adverse health implications." Parents and caregivers who may have purchased the product are advised to check the lot codes and "use by" dates on the bottom of the package and to contact their healthcare provider if they have any concerns.
Perrigo has taken immediate action by notifying H-E-B Grocery Company and CVS directly, asking them to examine their retail and warehouse inventory and isolate the product.
