Glenn: NFL ‘Controversy’ Is a Distraction From the Real Issues

What happened?

President Donald Trump poured gasoline on the dying embers of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s sitting and kneeling protests at NFL games. At a rally in Alabama, he called players who don’t stand during the National Anthem at games “sons of bitches” who should be “fired.” He continued to fuel the fire with multiple tweets. The controversy culminated with more players than ever choosing to kneel or sit in protest at Sunday’s games and people tweeting under #TakeAKnee over the weekend.

Didn’t we already see this last year?

Yes. Kaepernick started his protest in August of last year, telling media that he was speaking up against police brutality and advocating for the oppressed people who don’t have his platform. “People are dying in vain because this country isn’t holding their end of the bargain up, as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everybody,” he said last year.

Glenn’s take:

Whether or not you agree with Kaepernick’s reasoning, the bottom lines is that “private citizens and companies can do whatever they want,” Glenn said.

“We may not agree with it; in fact, we may hate it. But they have that right to do it,” he asserted on radio Monday.

But while Kaepernick has the right to protest, Glenn objected to the motivation behind it, saying that the former San Francisco 49er was “not an honest broker” and needed to protest for his own publicity.

“The whole thing is a sham,” Glenn said of the protest.
