GOP Budget Plan Moves Forward, Paving a Clear Path for Tax Reform

INJOThe House Budget Committee held lengthy debates over the GOP budget proposal on Wednesday afternoon. The bill promises to balance the budget and paves an easier path to tax reform through reconciliation — at the cost of billions of dollars in cuts to social programs, including Medicaid and Medicare.

“Balancing the budget requires us to make tough choices, but the consequences of inaction far outweigh any political risks we may face,” Chairman Diane Black (R-Tenn.) said during her opening statement to the committee.

The GOP plan echoes key parts of Republican agenda: outlining a course for a major tax overhaul through reconciliation, a process that streamlines tax and spending legislation by reducing the number of Senate votes needed to pass the GOP's tax plan from 60 to 51.

According to the budget blueprint, mandatory spending will be reduced by at least $203 billion over the next 10 years.
